Comic book movies and bad tie in video games tend to go pretty much hand in hand. Shoot the same could be said for most movies and their video game counterparts. It has always made me wonder exactly who is buying these products that continue to justify the man power for these “cash-ins”. As it turns out it pretty much boils down to very small children, parents who don’t take the time to know better, and people like me. I tend to operate under that old saying “Monkey see, monkey do”, which for the longest time I had assumed was about monkeys seeing their own poo. As it happens it actually is a saying that just fits me quite well. Take for instance Thor, no sooner had I left the theater than already was my mind fantasizing of wielding a magical hammer and calling thunder and lightning at my whim. Companies know that my odds of finding such power are slim, so they do the next best thing, make a video game of it.
As a movie Thor stands solidly among the more recent releases by Marvel and DC. It never really hit the heights of a film like “The Dark Knight”, where the movie seems to escape that mold of “this is a super hero movie”, but then again I don’t think Marvel wants it to. Right now they seem quite content to continue to release film after film glorifying the outrageousness and over the top nature of comic books. That’s fine with me too, I love comics and these movies might not be as good as Nolan’s epic, but they certainly have captured that sense of wonder and excitement I still get reading the comics. I even found myself giddy and whispering excitedly to those around me when another Avenger cameo caught me off guard in Thor. These are the kinds of things these movies do to guys like me who grew up on this stuff.
